Sunday Post: Snow showers today

Connecting with others to talk about books plus a little about our personal lives

Kimberly hosts the Sunday Post each week. I like to take part because it gives me an opportunity to look back at last week and forward to next week in both my personal life and my blog and book life! I also love to see what other people are doing and what books everyone is reading.

Personal life

We have some snow showers mixed at times with rain showers this Sunday morning. There shouldn’t be any snow accumulation, but it’s cold out! However, by midweek we should have temps in the 50’s during the day.

Thanksgiving Prep

Thanksgiving is on November 25 this year in the U.S. and it’s a favorite time in our family. We didn’t get together with our whole family last year so those of us getting together this year are looking forward to seeing each other. Our niece and her family are hosting Thanksgiving and they live only about 20 minutes from us. It’s so nice not to have to travel far on Thanksgiving. However, we do have family flying in from Seattle and southern California and others driving from Illinois, Iowa, northern Wisconsin and Canada so it’s quite a trip for lots of the family. We expect to have about 45 adults and children attend this year. I’m so happy that our kids will all be here.

We’ve invited the family for brunch at our new house on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a chance for the out-of-town family to see the new house. My husband and I are working to make sure our house is tidy. We have boxes we still needed to unpack so having people come to our house has spurred us on.

I’m also cooking two smaller turkeys (around 13 pounds each) as well as making turkey gravy, a wild rice pilaf and cranberry chutney. Several of those things can be made ahead and frozen so that’s what I’m trying to get done so I can enjoy the day and catch-up with family members.

We’ve put a scarecrow up near our front door. We also have a ring doorbell that lets us know when someone comes to the door. Since we put the scarecrow up we have gotten a number of “false” alarms from the ring doorbell–especially when the wind is blowing and the scarecrow swings this way and that!

Olaf loves to hide in paper bags and then jump out to surprise us. We moved a bookcase near one of his towers and he discovered he could jump up to the top of the bookcase to hang out!

It’s been two weeks since I posted anything. November and December are busy months for me so my blogging is suffering. I have read and listened to some good books though. That relaxes me when I’m feeling stressed! I found some Christmas books to get from the library so I hope I find time to read those.

  1. You have been reading some good books! I like listening while working on unpacking. I still have some things to unpack after 2 years and now along with that the kitchen things which just got repacked in October. Audiobooks really help with feeling like I’m not losing the time. I hope you have a great time with family. We aren’t ready for that kind of group yet. And who knows what kind of shape the kitchen will be in? But maybe by next year. I’m glad to say we are staying about 20 degrees above your temps although it kissed freezing last night here.

    1. I have read some good books lately, Anne, which is helping me get on track to meet my Goodreads reading goal for the year. Through the years and our many moves we’ve had unpacked boxes that we’ve moved unopened to our next house! We’re trying to do better getting things unpacked this time.

I’m looking forward to our Thanksgiving and I hope everything goes well. Vaccinations have made me feel more confident being with a group of people.

  2. I’ve seen so many people talking about getting snow, and here in California it’s been in the 80s/90s! I wouldn’t say no to snow right now😁 Have a good week, Jan😁

    1. I have to admit I love a definite change of seasons. Cooler weather in autumn and snow in winter are favorite types of weather for me, Tammy! Southern California is definitely seeing lots of hot weather in the past few years.

  3. The part about the ring doorbell and the scarecrow made me laugh. We have sidelights around our door and every once in awhile the wind will blow the trees just right as I’m walking by and I’m convinced someone is coming up the steps! Love the Olaf pictures! Have a great week!

    1. The scarecrow has been funny. My craft room looks out on the front yard and every now and then the scarecrow has swung around from the wind and I think someone is watching me, Katherine!

  4. I want snow!!! Where do you people live that are getting the snow? You’re like the 3rd blogger who has mentioned it. lol
45 people adults and a multitude of children! Where will they all sit to eat and will there be a buffet table set up or something? How fun! It’ll just be me and the 94-yo for Thanksgiving. lol
Olaf!!! I love that cute kitty so much.

    1. Our snow didn’t stay around for more than a couple of hours, Jinjer! When we lived in Iowa the past five years we had lots of snow and cold weather, but here in Indiana we won’t get as much snow–maybe just once during the winter. I think Indianapolis is more likely to get ice storms which are worse than snow, IMHO.

We’re looking forward to Thanksgiving. Always lot of food, games and talking! Olaf is such a sweetie and so funny.

      1. Oh Indiana! I was born and raised for my first 5 years in Indianapolis. There are pictures of me in a cute pink snowsuit sitting on a wall of snow.

        Enjoy your Thanksgiving!!!!

  5. We had some snow too over the weekend- big fat flakes drifting lazily down! It was cold too but at least the snow didn’t stick around.

Glad to hear you’re going to have lots of family for the holiday! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Greg. The snow didn’t stick around here long either. And today we’re going to get rain and the temps are already in the low 60’s! (Though it’s getting colder again tomorrow.)
