This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived by Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below. For more information check out the Taking on a World of Words blog.
The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
I haven’t read or blogged or commented a lot since my husband and I are building a fence in our large backyard. It’s taking a lot of time and I’m really tired when we’re not out there fence building. Today is a rainy day (we might get an inch of rain by the time the thunderstorms finish up) so I’m hoping to get caught up some on blogging.
The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi (Science Fiction, Space Opera)
I’m listening to the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton. I’m almost done and I’m loving it!
Den of Wolves by Juliet Marillier (Fantasy)
I’m still not far into this book. I decided I needed to read a mystery since I hadn’t read any in a few weeks!
Police procedurals are my favorite mystery subgenre right now and when I saw this series I decided I needed to try it. I enjoyed this first book, but had some reservations. I felt DCI Sophie Allen was a little too perfect as were her family. I’m hoping the next book or two will change my opinion.
Dark Crimes by Michael Hambling
DCI Sophie Allen series #1
Mystery, Police Procedural
A young woman’s body is discovered on a deserted footpath in a Dorset seaside town late on a cold November night. She has been stabbed through the heart.
It seems like a simple crime for DCI Sophie Allen and her team to solve. But not when the victim’s mother is found strangled the next morning. The case grows more complex as DCI Sophie Allen discovers that the victims had secret histories, involving violence and intimidation. There’s an obvious suspect but Detective Allen isn’t convinced. Could someone else be lurking in the shadows, someone savagely violent, looking for a warped revenge?
Reading next (perhaps–I’m very much a mood reader!)
by Martha Wells
The Murderbot Diaries #1
Science Fiction Novella
Synopsis: In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.
But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.
But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it’s up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.
Hunting Hour by Margaret Mizushima
Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #3
Mystery, Police Procedural
Deputy Mattie Cobb is working through issues from her past and has withdrawn from Cole Walker and his family to focus on herself, when she and her K-9 partner Robo get called to track a missing junior high student. Until they find the girl on Smoker’s Hill behind the high school, dead. But that’s only the start of trouble in Timber Creek, because soon another girl goes missing–and this time it’s Sophie Walker. Hard as they search, Cole, Mattie, and Robo can’t find her anywhere. Mattie’s primary suspect, a strange man who lives near the wilderness area, calls to report he hears deer “screaming” in the woods. Suspecting the man might have lost touch with reality and be referring to something he’s done to Sophie, Mattie takes Robo into the dense pine forest, hoping to pick up a trace of her scent. But when Robo does catch Sophie’s trail, it leads them to another clue that challenges everything they thought they knew about the case. Now Mattie and Robo must rush to hunt down Sophie’s kidnapper before they’re too late in Hunting Hour, the third installment in critically acclaimed author Margaret Mizushima’s exhilarating mystery series.
A Symphony of Echoes by Jodi Taylor
