Sunday Post: July 17

Sunday-Post

This is a great meme to take part in every week and I thank Kimba for hosting it!

I like this meme because it gives me an opportunity to take a look back at last week and forward to next week in both my personal life and my blog and book life! I also like to see what other people are doing and what books everyone is reading.

Last week–home and blog

A busy week both at home and around town!

Waiting in line–hurry up and wait

We spent a whole day waiting at various government agencies getting drivers’ and vehicle licenses. We went to three different buildings miles apart after we waited 2 hours at the first place. I was exhausted when we got home.

We also got library cards for two communities close to us which means I can put books on hold there. That gives me more chances of finding the books I want. Or finding new books I didn’t know I wanted.

Putting things away

We spent a lot of time unpacking boxes–most of them pictures. We have lots of pictures and we want to unpack them all before we decide what to hang and where to hang it.

We also bought a new refrigerator which was delivered this week. The existing refrigerator was really old and though it worked there were parts of it not working. It seemed to always be running. We bought an Energy Smart refrigerator so our power company will give us a rebate. Taking everything out of the refrigerator and then putting it back in was a lot of work!

Television

We’ve watched a little television the last couple of weeks. Our favorites:

The Great British Baking Show on PBS. The new season started a couple weeks ago. This is my favorite reality cooking show. Knowledgeable judges, funny and sympathetic hosts and interesting British home bakers. Some of the things they have to bake I’ve never heard of and sometimes the bakers haven’t heard of them either!

We watched the final three or four episodes of last year’s Dark Matter to remember what happened. We’ve got some of the new season recorded and we’re ready to start watching. This science fiction show is one of our favorite shows from last year.

The blog

I got a few posts completed this week. Made me feel good! Not much reading completed though. I’m reading a good book, but couldn’t concentrate very long. I have so many good books I want to read. I want to get some reading done.

Interesting on the internet

Free Sync Audio books

Sync is back again for the summer (May 5 – Aug 17). Sync is a program which provides two free young adult audiobook downloads each week. Each set of books are only available for one week.

The Sync books available this week (July 14 – 21):

Only 5 more weeks of Sync books!

The Sync books available next week (July 21 – 28)

To listen to these books you must download Overdrive Media Console. It is available free to download at the Sync site.

Note: Some of the books have international restrictions, but some are available even if you live outside the U.S.

Next Week–home & blog

More of the same–putting things away or reorganizing so we have more places to put things. Thinking of recipes which won’t heat up the house since the forecast is for around 100 degrees several days next week. I have a few things planned for the blog.

What did you do last week? What books did you collect? What are you planning?

Author: Jan

I love to read--especially mysteries, science fiction and fantasy. I also love blogging, photography, gardening, playing Mah Jonng, reading with a cat on my lap, throwing a ball for a dog, creating cards to send to family and friends, reading book blogs, using my computer.

  1. Oh my goodness! Yes… always so much work to do when you’ve moved house and in those temperatures – you must be shattered by the end of the day. No wonder you didn’t get much read during this last week! I’m interested to see you’re also reading the Heartstrikers’ series. Have you read any of her other work? I really like her writing. Hope the temperature nocks down a notch or two next week to make your chores more bearable. Take care and have a good week.

    1. It’s even hotter this week. Whew! From today through Saturday evening we have a heat warning so we’re mostly staying inside.

I’ve read the Paradox series by Rachel Bach (who is also Rachel Aaron). It’s a science fiction series and is very good. I haven’t read the Eli Monpress series by Rachel Aaron, however.

  2. Oh I don’t envy you all that waiting. Is there anything that more unnecessarily time consuming than drivers licenses? But now that you’ve gotten that done hopefully things will be on the smooth side. That’s great about the library and the starting to unpack! I love the Great British Baking Show! I have all of this season so far recorded but we haven’t actually started watching it. I think the hosts are my favorites but I love just how nice everyone is. Have a great week!

    1. I agree, Katherine. It seems like there is always a wait at the license places. We do have the licenses now so that’s good. Isn’t the Baking Show fun! I really like how nice and helpful everyone is, too.

  3. Isn’t the wait aggravating for driver licenses and such? Amazing to me that in this day and age we can’t speed these things up lol. And it is nice to sometimes have several library cards- we have a library by us that is nice, but a bigger one a little farther away and often find stuff there that we can’t at the closer one.

It’s nice to see Dark Matter back, I’m enjoying that show as well.

    1. Iowa offers driver’s licenses for as long as seven years at a time so I would think they would have fewer people at their offices, however that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I’m enjoying the libraries and all the books, but now I have to keep track of all them . . .haha.

  4. We need to get our new licenses too, something I’ve been putting off since we just moved from one town to another two towns over, but has to be done. And unpacking, yes, still…

I haven’t been reading much either, but read The Silent Dead by Claire McGowan. It’s a Northern Ireland police procedural, if that is something you would enjoy. It’s third in the series but can be dropped into anywhere and you can enjoy, I would think. She’s like a Tana French type of author and intelligently written, concentrating much on the “Troubles” that took place in Ireland.

    Have a great week ahead!

    1. Thanks, Rita. It definitely takes awhile to get settled in after a move. I picked up the first Claire McGowan a few months ago and haven’t read it yet. Glad to know you like the series. I’ll try to slip it in soon. I thought the Northern Ireland setting would be interesting to read about.

  5. Three cheers for new library cards! That’s very exciting! Hopefully between the two of them you’ll be able to find most – if not all – of the books you’re looking for. 🙂

I’m looking forward to your thoughts on No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished, I need to read that one soon too!

  6. Moving is so exhausting and time consuming, isn’t it? It sounds as if you’re getting settled in. YAY for library cards!!! When I move, library cards among the first items I take care of.:D Good luck with everything this week and I hope you get some reading in.

    1. Yes, one of my first things to do, too, Bea. I got a library card for my city as soon as I could so now I have three library cards. Now I just need to keep my books straight…lol.

I am (re)listening to One Good Dragons Deserves Another as I prepare a review. I can’t wait for the 3rd one to come to Audible so I can listen to it.
