My favorite books read in 2014 . . .

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme which I take part in when I can. It’s a great meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish blog. Every week a new topic is presented. It’s not only fun to think about my own list, but to read what other people come up with!

This week we talk about our top reads of 2014. The books I chose are either the beginnings of series or new authors (and some were in my favorite new author list from last week).

My list (in no particular order):

Redshirts by John Scalzi (science fiction)–John Scalzi is on of my favorite new authors for this year. I love his writing and stories. This is my current favorite of his.

Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews (fantasy)–Clean Sweep was offered for free on the Andrews’ blog as a serial. I didn’t read it until it came out as an e-book. This was a fun book to read. Ilona Andrews wrote something just for the love of writing and it shows. The second book in the series–Sweep in Peace–is now serialized on the Ilona Andrews’ site for free.

Iron Night by M. L. Brennan (urban fantasy)–A series I began this year. I first found out about this series from Nathan at Fantasy Review Barn. Such a fun series to read and a little different take on vampires and urban fantasy.

Earth Girl by Janet Edwards (science fiction)–Another series I began this year. I didn’t read too many science fiction this year, but this is one I’m so glad I did. A depopulated Earth in the future with archaeology. A great mix.

Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron (urban fantasy)–Another new-to-me author who is a favorite new author as well a favorite read. I love the new beginning for this series about dragons.

The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells (fantasy)–I’m loving reading about the Raksura. The world building and stories are excellent.

The Perilous Sea by Sherry Thomas (young adult fantasy)–This is the second book in the Elemental Trilogy and I’ve really liked both a lot. A young adult fantasy which makes me eager to see what’s going to happen in book 3.

Letters to Nowhere by Julie Cross (contemporary young adult)–I don’t usually read contemporary young adult books, but this was part of a TBR challenge which I participated in. And several people whose blogs I read recommended this book and this author. I’m so glad I read it. The book has really stuck with even though I read it months ago.

Dreaming of the Bones by Deborah Crombie (mystery)–I’ve read Nine books so far this year by Ms. Crombie! These books also have brought a newly renewed loved of mysteries. Since September (when I read my first Deborah Crombie book) I’ve read 15 mysteries!

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley (historical fiction/romance)–I listened to this book and the narration and the story are both excellent. I love the story–the mix of history and contemporary setting–and the way Ms. Kearsley writes.

Honorable Mention

Caszandra by Andrea K. Höst–I read most of the books in this series in 2013 so included it my favorites last year.

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews–I already included Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews so put this in the honorable mentions.

Valor’s Choice by Tanya Huff–This was a re-read for me so I didn’t add it above.

Pivot Point by Kasie West–I really like this book, but I haven’t read the second book so I decided it wasn’t in my top ten!

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear–A good book with a good narrator.

I could have added many more to my honorable mentions, but cut it off at five!

This was a great reading year for me. I found great new authors and wonderful books to read. What about you? What books did you like this year?
