Favorite new-to-me authors

toptentuesday2

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme which I participate in when I can. It’s a great meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish blog. Every week a new topic is presented. It’s not only fun to think about my own list, but to read what other people come up with!

This week we talk about our favorite new authors we read in 2014. All these authors are wonderful surprises to me and I will read more books by them in the years to come (as long as they keep writing!) And they’re in no particular order. . . .

1. John Scalzi–I read Old Man’s War in January. That was my first John Scalzi book and since then read Redshirts, listened to Fuzzy Nation and bought Lock In to read.

2. Susanna Kearsley–I listened to The Winter Sea and loved it. The narrator (Rosalyn Landor) is wonderful and the writing is lyrical. I have several more of her books I need to read.

3. M. L. Brennan–I read two books in the Generation V series so far this year. I have the third book and want to read it soon.

4. Janet Edwards–I quickly read the first two books in the Earth Girl science fiction series and loved them. The third book is already published in England and some other places. I want to read that book and it may come out in the U.S. in April 2015. I hope so!

5. Martha Wells–I’ve read the first two books in the Books of the Raksura series and I love this series. I want to read the third book soon! I also have a few other books by Ms. Wells I want to read.

6. Deborah Crombie–I listened to (narrator is Michael Deehy) my first Gemma James & Duncan Kincaid mystery in mid-September and since then I’ve read eight more! I love this series!

7. Jacqueline Winspear–I listened to Maisie Dobbs which is a historical mystery set after WWI. I loved the narrator (Rita Barrington) and the story.

8. Juliet Marillier–Why have I waited so long to read any of her books? I’ve had several books by her for quite a while, but it took her new book–Dreamer’s Pool–and all the good stuff I heard about it to get me to read it. Such a good book and good author!

9. Rachel Bach aka Rachel Aaron–I read four books by Rachel this year. Three were the science fiction Paradox series by Rachel Bach and the other is her excellent self-published fantasy–Nice Dragons Finish Last.

10. James S. A. Corey–I read Leviathan Wakes, which introduces a huge science fiction world. Lots goes on in this book and I’ve finally gotten the second book so this is another book I need to read soon!
