Top Ten Tuesday–Making my blogging & reading life easier

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish blog. There is a new topic each week which asks each person to talk about some sort of top ten topic related to books. Go by and check it out. It’s a lot of fun to see what each blogger writes each week. I don’t participate every week, but when I can, I try to!

This week I’m talking about those things which make my life as a reader and blogger easier. Other than my first choice(!) they aren’t in any particular order. I’ve also added a couple of honorable mentions.

1. Kindle e-readers–I love my e-reader. I’ve had e-readers for about three years now and I haven’t read any physical books except for nonfiction in about two years. There’s just something about the Kindle I love. I’m using a Kindle Paperwhite and a Kindle Fire and love them both.

One other way this makes it easier for me is when I travel. I used to take a box of books when we drove and even when we flew I would travel with 9 or 10 books!

The awesome thing about my e-reader, too, is when I ride my exercise bike: the Kindle fits on the narrow ledge of the bike so I can read. I can also make the print larger on the Kindle if I need to. Physical books and magazines always fall down.

2. Ebooks–As I stated above I’m reading only ebooks these days. I don’t know why I like them so much, but I do. This year I’ve also read more new authors because of ebooks. I like to buy ebooks for $3.99 and below and for this price I’m willing to buy unknown authors. I also like ebooks because authors I like can publish their older books which are often out-of-print.

3. WordPress–I really like this blogging platform. It’s great for blogging. One of the reasons I’m blogging is that I love technology and it’s fun to learn new things. I’m also aware this sometimes can cause problems for my blog and changing things just to change them can be disconcerting for my readers. But it’s one of the reasons I’m blogging–I want to learn more.

I’m starting a class this week about the self-hosted version of WordPress. I’m considering moving my blog to a self-hosted site or perhaps creating a site for my crafting and cardmaking or maybe both!

4. Google & internet–I love that I can find out about new books and authors to read by using Google to search the internet. I can find favorite authors and see what they’re doing next as well as find book covers for my reviews.

5. Amazon–I buy most of my books from Amazon. I know many people don’t like Amazon, but I’m a fan. I also use it to find similar books to ones I like.

6. Other book review blogs–This is the main reason I started my blog…I wanted to connect with other book review blogs and bloggers. Not many of my friends read the kind of books I like and some don’t even read (which is really sad). I’ve met so many great people blogging about books.

7. Highlighting as I read on my Kindle–I like to highlight passages and then when I’m writing my review I can read through them for pertinent facts or quotes. It really helps me…especially if too much time passes between reading the book and writing the review…lol

8. Reading light on my Kindle–I have a Kindle Paperwhite which has lights up whenever I open up the cover. That makes it great to read at night when my husband is sleeping! When I was reading regular books I used booklights, but they never worked that well. This works great!

9. Netvibes–This is the newsreader I’m using right now. I had Google Reader on my computer, but never used it that much. I’m using Netvibes some. It does help me find posts I want to read so I guess it saves a little time. I haven’t completely decided about it yet. I like the views it offers. but I’m not that familiar with other readers so they may be better.

10. My laptop computer–Using a laptop lets me sit in the family room and use the computer to write my blog posts. I like that. I do a lot of my blog posts in the evening after my husband gets home from work. He watches TV…news, The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert, programs like that…and I like to spend time with him. I find I can usually half listen to the TV while I write posts, visit other blogs and proofread my posts. So it’s a win-win for me!

Honorable Mentions

Goodreads–I’ve only used Goodreads a little bit. I signed up for it just a few months ago and haven’t used it very much yet. The problem is I can see I would use it too much and spend too much time if I’m not careful!

Library–I’m a lifelong library user, but since I’ve begun reading ebooks I don’t use it as often, because so many ebooks aren’t available at libraries. Which is the publishers’ fault–not the fault of libraries.
