Christine Merrill is an author I haven’t read before and so it’s part of my New Authors Challenge which is hosted by the Literary Escapism blog. Check out their blog and also the challenge. I’m really enjoying all the new authors I’m reading this year!

Synopsis: Compromised and wedded on the same day, Lady Miranda was fast finding married life not to her taste. A decaying manor and a secretive husband were hardly the stuff of girlish dreams. Yet every time she looked at dark, brooding Marcus Radwell, Duke of Haughleigh, she felt inexplicably compelled–and determined–to make their marriage real.

She was going to focus on the task before her. Not one step behind. Not one mile ahead. Just one step at a time until she could walk herself out of the maze she was lost in.

What worked for me:

  • I like Marcus Radwell (the Duke) and Lady Miranda.
  • I enjoyed the first part of the book when I met the characters. I think it would have worked better as a novella.

What didn’t work:

  • The plot seemed too improbable, but at the same time predictable.
  • The book dragged for me.  I read the last half of the book quickly just so I could finish.
  • Too many misunderstandings which could have been cleared up much quicker. I could understand some of the silence between Marcus and Miranda, but it still was annoying.

My thoughts:

I read this book in December because I thought it took place during Christmas. The red and green dress fooled me…lol. I liked the characters alright, but for me it was only an average read.
