Review: Hunting by Andrea K. Höst

December 16, 2013 2013, A-, book rating, reviews 0

Andrea K. Höst is an author I haven’t read before and so it’s part of my New Authors Challenge which is hosted by the Literary Escapism blog. Check out their blog and also the challenge. I’m really enjoying all the new authors I’m reading this year!

I’ve already achieved my challenge amount of 25 new authors for 2013 so the rest of the new authors I read this year are extras!

Synopsis: Ash Lenthard doesn’t call herself a vigilante. She’s merely prone to random acts of derring-do, and occasional exhibitions of tomfoolery. Her friends, the Huntsmen, have never stepped over the line while patrolling the streets of Luinhall.

That was before the murder of Ash’s beloved guardian, Genevieve.

Now, Ash Lenthard is out for blood and even when the hunt sends her to the palace, on a collision course with a past identity she would do anything to forget, Ash cannot, will not, back down.

What I like about this book:

  • Ash is intrepid and even though she’s led a difficult life so far she’s very self-aware.
  • Both Ash and Thornaster have a moral compass and know the right thing to do.
  • She dresses as a boy and manages to fool everyone! And she gets herself out of her own scrapes!
  • Ash is a leader and very adept at getting people to do what she wants them to do. She consciously decides whether to manipulate people or not!
  • She meets her match in Thornaster who usually manages to stay a step ahead of her so she doesn’t run away as she wants to and finally learns to trust Thornaster.
  • Just the right amount of romance for a fantasy.

What I don’t like:

  • I would like to read more about this world.

My thoughts:

Such a joy to read. I like the characters and the way they solve their problems. This book was a great way to discover a new author. I plan to read a lot more books by Andrea K. Höst and am so happy she has quite a backlog of books already written and is still writing!

I first read about Ms. Höst on Li’s blog–Me and My Books blog. I’ve found so many great books and new authors from her. We have similar tastes in science fiction and fantasy. So, thank you very much, Li!

Thanks, Kim! This book was so good. I’m very excited to find such a good author to read–and she has quite a few books for me to wade through!

Jan! I’m so pleased HUNTING worked for you 🙂 Totally agree it was *just* the right amount of romance for a fantasy.

I started with her Touchstone trilogy books (best described as science fantasy, I think) because Estara loved them, and then I pretty much glommed her entire backlist. Like you, I love it when there’s an entire backlist to explore!

Li, I just finished Stray on Monday and loved it. Both books I’ve read so far by Ms. Host are really good.
