My name is Jan. I live in the Midwest. My husband and I have three kids–two daughters and a son. Our kids also live in the Midwest–which is a big plus for us! One of our daughters lives in Iowa as well as some other family. Our older daughter lives in Illinois and our son is deciding where he wants to live in the Midwest. We have lots of other family throughout the Midwest.
As my name implies, I want to keep my posts short.
After I finish one book I get a little itchy until I can start my next book. 🙂
Some of my earliest memories are of my Mom reading to me. The books I especially remember are the Winnie the Pooh books, Wind in the Willows and Mary Poppins. She loved to read. I remember sometimes coming home from school and seeing her deep into a book. We ended up reading some of the same books and authors–especially mysteries. We both read Dick Francis and Tony Hillerman and we would send each other recommendations and books. I really miss that.
As soon as I could read I became an enthusiastic reader. Even in the summer as well as playing with friends I also spent a lot of time reading and keeping lists of the books I read.
Genres I currently read
- Mysteries–especially police procedurals and a few cozys–notably Deborah Crombie, Julia Spencer-Fleming, Julie Mulhern
- Science Fiction–especially military science fiction, space opera–notably John Scalzi, Elizabeth Moon, Tanya Huff
- Fantasy–especially urban fantasy–notably Ilona Andrews, Anne Bishop, Patricia Briggs
In 2018 I’ve decided to add a few things I will write about (and one I’m not writing about)
- mostly still about books–discussions, memes and mini reviews
- creating my cards
- family history
- cooking and baking
- And I’m not reading NetGalley books anymore or other books provided by authors or publishers
A few of my favorite things
Family, blogging, computers, card creation, animals (we currently have three cats–Elf, Katzi, Scorch), gardening, genealogy and family history, playing Mah Jongg. I also love coffee, dog and cats, sitting and reading my Kindle (my favorite way to read), flowers on my plants, watching the different kinds of birds come to our bird feeders.
My husband and I moved to Iowa in 2016 when my husband retired from the federal government. Sometimes people who live on the U.S. east coast or west coast call the Midwest “The Great Flyover!” However, we’re loving retirement in Iowa.
