Can’t-Wait Wednesday: Head On by John Scalzi

September 20, 2017 2017, Can't Wait Wednesday 16

I used to take part in Waiting on Wednesday hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. I’ve decided to begin participating again, but with Can’t-Wait Wednesday hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings since the Breaking the Spine blog is no longer active.

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. I love finding out about books which will publish in future months and I like to share my excitement about the books. I also like to find out about new books on other people’s blogs and hope they’ll sometimes find something to look forward to on my blog.

I’m looking forward to . . .

. . . reading more about this world John Scalzi has imagined. Plus what a great cover!

Series: Lock In #2

Genre: Science Fiction, Mystery

Publisher: Tor Books

Publication Date: April 19, 2018

Synopsis: Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent’s head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are “threeps,” robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden’s Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real and the crowds love it.
Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

Is it an accident or murder? FBI Agents and Haden-related crime investigators, Chris Shane and Leslie Vann, are called in to uncover the truth―and in doing so travel to the darker side of the fast-growing sport of Hilketa, where fortunes are made or lost, and where players and owners do whatever it takes to win, on and off the field.

……………..

I loved the first book in this series (Lock In) when I read it in 2015. The premise is so interesting to me–people who are literally locked into their bodies and minds, unable to move or communicate. This was caused by a contagious disease, but not everyone who got the disease were “Locked In.” However, a huge research effort by medical and scientific groups discovered a way for these people to have a life again.

The books are science fiction set in the near future and the main character is a FBI agent! So it’s a Mystery as well as Science Fiction. And John Scalzi is one of my favorite authors! Yay!

Have you read the first book in the series? How did you like it? What are you looking forward to?

I really enjoyed Redshirts by Scalzi, but I haven’t had a chance to read his other work yet. This does sound like it presents an interesting predicament. I hope you enjoy it! I will have to look for the first book in the series.
